Book Love: Help for Reluctant Readers

January 14, 2013

I had the opportunity to review Melissa Taylor's new book Book Love: Help Your Child Grow from Reluctant to Enthusiastic Reader and let me tell you it is a treasure trove of helpful information for parents of young children who are learning to read.

I've shared some of my experience in teaching Juliet to read and fortunately, she is a very enthusiastic reader. However, there were still so many helpful tips and ideas that I will be using to help make reading fun for her and to teach her more in regards to comprehension strategies and sight word practice.

I also just loved being aware of potential pitfalls that young readers face so I can watch out for them with Lucia when that time comes.

Her book is so easy to read that I sat down and read it cover to cover in one sitting. The pages are well-laid out and bright and easy to follow.

I would definitely recommend this to every parent of young children. It's filled with games and activities that I would have never thought of and so many helpful tips on encouraging your young reader.

Another really wonderful aspect of the book is all the links--I got the paperback copy (instead of the kindle version) and was a bit sad that I couldn't click on the links, but then I discovered that she has the entire list of links on her website Book Love, so I was able to click away!

There are also several booklists organized by categories to help your child hone in on topics that he or she really loves.

For those of you with younger children, you'll be encouraged, like I was by this portion of the book:

Want to know the biggest predictor of your child's reading success?

You. Reading to him. Every day.

So, keep on reading those books together and when your child gets to the reading on his own stage, Book Love will be one of the best resources you can find to guide you in the process.

This book was provided to me for review purposes. All the opinions expressed are my own.
