children's books about telling time

August 27, 2012

Juliet recently learned how to tell time on a clock with hands. I was fairly shocked at how easily she took to it as I still have trouble reading clocks without numbers from time to time.

At any rate, we checked out some Time books from the library just for kicks. They ended up being a little to detailed for her (since she already knew how to read a clock --all the explanation about how and why were overkill at this point, but we had fun flipping through them and practicing reading the times on the various clocks.)

However, I found these books to be excellent, so I thought I'd share them here.

About Time: A First Look at Time and Clocks

Telling Time: How to Tell Time on Digital and Analog Clocks!

Is It Time for the Party? (Learning About Minutes and Hours, A Hallmark Play-Time Book)
This is one from our personal collection that we have loved for years--even before she could actually tell time. It has charming vintage illustrations and the magic of clock hands that can be moved to the time described on the page in the story. And it is about a birthday party, so that makes it extra awesome.

I've written about this one before, but never seen it for sale anywhere--there are 4 used copies on amazon now, so there's a chance to pick up a copy if you've been wanting one.

We also have this Write-On / Wipe-Off Demonstration Clock that she's been having fun with lately. Currently, I'm on the hunt for a fun analog clock to hang on the wall somewhere. I just realized that all the clocks in our house are digital. :)

How did you teach your kids to tell time? Any fun books or resources to recommend?
