picture books about Iraq

July 13, 2012

Reading helps us know we are not alone--in that there are others out there who see and experience and feel the same things we do.

It also helps us expand our vision--to see people and places that are different from our own experience.

I love a book that accomplishes both of those goals at the same time. The Librarian of Basra: A True Story from Iraq is set in a place I have never been and in a war-torn setting that I hope I never experience.

And even though it seems so far away and different, this story is about a librarian who goes to great personal risk to herself and her friends to save the books in her town's library.

Her story is pretty incredible and it makes me thankful for books, and libraries, and the people who work hard to make sure my children have plenty of good books to read.

This looks very interesting, so did you read it with J? What did she think?
