how to build a home library

ikea bookshelves
Our hall "library" is filled with books. This is our upstairs hallway of our three-bedroom home. There is not much space in the hall, so it is almost impossible to get a full shot of the shelves. This is the best I could get.

It is two of the Ikea Billy bookshelves side by side.

The bottom three shelves on both sides are for kids books. The top 3 are for mine and Ben's books.

I like peeking at other people's shelves, so I thought I'd share some photos of ours.
Starting at the bottom left is Lucia's 3 shelves. This is mostly board books.

Moving up, I added my collection of Parents Press books. (Like Rabbit's New Rug )
Most of these are my own from my childhood, but some are ones I have recently added to my stash. This is my favorite collection of books.

Directly above that, we start to get into Ben's books. The peony in the middle is mine, though. :)
More Ben books. He is very neat and organized. See that spot where a book is missing? That's because I was reading Mockingjay when I took this photo. I've finished it now and put it back in its proper place.

Here we are on Juliet's side.

Moving up--you can see our human body book collection on the top left.
organizing books
Moving up a bit more, you get into my section. It is half overrun by children's books--not ones I lay claim to especially, just ran out of room in the lower levels.

You can also see an abundance of baby name books (my favorite) and a ton of strength finders stuff.

That's pretty much it! We love having a "library" in our hallway. We been able to move most of the books that have been in piles or baskets or tucked into corners into a space of their own.

The kids love browsing the shelves and selecting stores to read before bedtime or nap.

I like that the books are accessible to the girls and that they can see all of Ben and my books as well.

This project has reminded me that you can squeeze in a library almost anywhere in your house where you have an empty wall--even in a hallway!

I always thought that "someday" we would have a room that we could dedicate as a library, but there was no reason to wait. We created one upstairs and the best part is, if the sudden urge to do laundry comes upon us while we are book browsing, all we have to do is turn around and there is our laundry closet! :)
