when I grow up: kids books about careers

Maybe You Should Fly a Jet! Maybe You Should Be a Vet! (Beginner Books)
We have a copy of Maybe You Should Fly a Jet! Maybe You Should Be a Vet!  (the old version). It's a funny book that gets kids thinking about all the possibilities for future career choices.

Even though it is trying to bust gender stereotypes (the jet pilot is a woman), it still ends up reinforcing them (or creating new ones) in a way. The other day, Juliet said to me, "Some guys are good tight rope walkers.....can girls do that do?"

The OK Book
The OK Book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal is a book that celebrates being OK--not great, fantastic, or the best, but simply OK. It's nice to relieve some of the pressure to always be number one and just focus on enjoying a lot of different things in life. The end says, "One day, I'll grow up to be really excellent at something. I don't know what it is yet...but I sure am having fun figuring it out."

We recently took our cat to the vet for her yearly checkup, so I was excited to find this book at the library. It's about a day in the life of a vet (as told by her pet dog, Paw.)  Beautiful illustrations.

Here are a few others I'm hoping to find:
