the best book for new and expectant moms

July 26, 2011

Did you take a birthing class when you were pregnant with your first child? I did. And aside from being vaguely interested in the knitted uterus (I thought that was a pretty clever visual aid), I didn't feel like I learned that much that was useful for my upcoming labor and birthing experience.

In fact, I actually felt that the class was more detrimental than helpful because on week #4, they showed us the infamous "birth video" and I left the class in tears, more terrified than ever, and vowing that if I survived this delivery, I would never get pregnant again. Ben decided then and there that I should not return the following week for the c-section video. (Smart guy.)

Anyways, I obviously survived the ordeal (which wasn't such an ordeal after all, as I had a very good experience with Juliet's birth.) and went on to get pregnant and give birth to yet another child without complication.

And that's when my friend Sarah, sent me a copy of her new book. She asked me to review it for her and give her some feedback. Being the book lover, book blogger,  and editor that I am, I gladly jumped at the chance. But I have to admit, I didn't think I would learn anything new from it. I mean, I had already given birth twice, I was practically an expert, right?

Sarah started schooling me from chapter one. She referenced a book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility and I immediately checked to see if our library had a copy. They did and I picked it up. Let's just say that I spent the next week and a half immersed in it and learned so much information that I wished I had learned 10 or 15 years ago.

I wrote Sarah to apologize for taking so long, but that she had got me sidetracked with her recommendation. She laughed and said no problem.

I started reading her book again, thinking, "Now I'm pretty sure I know everything about this." But no, wrong again.

Not only has Sarah packed so much good information into her book, she has done it with humor and style. I was laughing out loud as she told about her own experience with her pregnancy and birth of her first child.

I kept thinking, "I wish I had a copy of this when I was pregnant the first time!" It's the birth preparation class that I needed--all the information I wanted, told from a non-judgemental viewpoint, infused with a healthy dose of humor.

It's the perfect baby shower gift and if you want a copy (or two+), Sarah has offered us the 20% discount code PREGS to use on your entire purchase. (Discount code excludes kindle version.)
