our library loot

June 9, 2011

I've got a big bag of library books to return tomorrow, so I thought I'd share our favorites from this past week.

The Favorite
Clever Beatrice
Clever Beatrice by Margaret Wiley
This was my very favorite. Not only was it a good story, but I also learned what a "lutin" is. (An elf in French-Canadian lore.) I think you'll like this one.

3 Princess Books
I am constantly searching for alternatives to those Disney girls and here are a few we enjoyed:
Falling For Rapunzel
Falling For Rapunzel by Leah Wilcox
This is a silly book, but it made Juliet laugh. She can't understand what the prince is saying "Throw down your hair", so she ends up throwing silly things out the window instead. Lots of giggles for four year olds.
The Paper Bag Princess (Classic Munsch)
The Paper Bag Princess (Classic Munsch)
This is not your typical princess story, just to warn you. The prince ends up being a "bum" and she decides she is better off without him. Juliet LOVED it.
Red Butterfly: How a Princess Smuggled the Secret of Silk Out of China
Red Butterfly: How a Princess Smuggled the Secret of Silk Out of China
This was a beautiful book, but kind of sad and probably not for a 4 year old. I skipped over the sad parts (she is a young girl sent off to marry an old king in an arranged marriage and she is sad to leave her home and family) which is pretty much the entire book--but an older child would probably enjoy it.

Name Books
We love finding name books for people we know!
Jack Of All Tails
Jack Of All Tails by Kim Norman
For cousin/nephew Jack. :) The book is not really about a "Jack", but rather a "Kristi" (one of my friends is named Kristi!), but I like the cover and the way the title is written. The book is about a family who pretends to be pets. Very funny.
Brave Ben
Brave Ben by Mathilde Stein
For Ben, of course. This is a good one for a kid learning to overcome fears.
Lilly's Big Day
Lilly's Big Day
We don't know any Lillys, but we sure do love this book.
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse
These last two are classic Henkes--have you read them yet?

What books did you enjoy this week?
