Folktails by Jan Thornhill
I'm always on the lookout for stories from around the world (in particular stories from our Compassion kid's countries), so I was really excited to discover these two books recently.
Folktails is a collection of animal legends from around the world. Not surprisingly, many of the same stories are shared by people all over the world. Of course, there are some variances--animals change, endings change, etc, but the basic parts are the same.
The regions you can visit via these animal tales are: India, West Africa, China, Australia, the Middle East, Northern Europe, Western Canada, South America, and the American Southwest.
This is a really fun collection, but I would say it is more for elementary school-aged children rather than preschoolers.
The Rumor: A Jataka Tale from India, also by Jan Thornhill is a fun read for preschoolers and up. The illustrations are gorgeous and the story is engaging. We loved this one.
Do you have any favorite animal tales to share?
I was provided with review copies of these books by Owlkids Books. The opinions expressed are completely my own.
