organizing children's bookshelves

April 29, 2011

I came across this post about organizing children's bookshelves by color by Darcy at Smart Bottom Enterprises.

I've seen decorators do this with books for big people, but this is the first time I've ever seen it with children's books.

What do you think? I kind of like how it looks! You should click through to see some more images and up close views of the shelves.

Right now, I organize by size and shape. I tend to collect books from a series (like these Random House Pop-Up books), so I group them together. I like how they are all the same size.
Dr. Seuss's ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book!Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books)Hop on PopThe Cat in the Hat
I've got the Dr. Seuss books together.
The Little Red Hen (Little Golden Book)The Fire Engine BookWalt Disney's Peter Pan (Little Golden Book)Good Night, Little Bear (Little Golden Book)
Of course, the little Golden Books look great grouped together. I love the foil binding.

Then I just have the assortment of paper backs on one shelf and the hardcovers on another.

What about you? How do you organize your kids' books? (or your own books, for that matter?)

I love them grouped by colors but in my daughter's room they would stay that way for like 5 minutes. I love the shelves-it all looks so organized. Right now ours are organized by chapter books, paperbacks, and hard covers by size. I think we need to do some organizing this weekend!

We really don't organize the books much. However, I do like to keep all the easy readers together.

Organization lasts about 2 seconds in our house. When I do try, I keep them grouped by author/series. I like the color idea though!

I group sets with common bindings - like vintage children's encyclopedias or storybook series, so you see blocks of color on the shelf (you know i love that!). I don't group the everyday books by color, because they never stay organized that way - BUT, I do group them by size. I work from largest at the end of the bookcase to smaller. All that being said, I always have some especially pretty books on display, either flat in the back of the bookcase so you can see the cover, or short stacks of common size/color on a bookshelf or dresser. Can't help myself :)

We sort our books by author and theme. Most of them are separated by theme, but we have a few favorite authors and their books are kept together. We also keep our series together, like Magic Tree house and such. Then within the theme/author they are sorted by size...biggest to smallest. It sounds like a lot of work when I write it out, but its actually a very simple and effective system for our house. I do like the aesthetic of separating by color, but not sure I would remember what book has what color spine when I went to look for it, but it is SUPER appealing to the eye. Looking forward to reading about everyone's else's ideas on how to organize our books.

It's so interesting to hear how everyone organizes their books--I think we all share the common problem of keeping them that way. ;)
