DIY playroom art: book character silhouettes

April 26, 2011

Recently, we rearranged our downstairs furniture to make room for a playroom. We used to have a family room and mostly unused sitting room, and a million toys scattered between the two spaces.

We decided to get rid of some stuff, move the furniture out of the sitting room and then consolidate all the toys in the new playroom.

There was a wall of frames in the old sitting room that had some prints in it that were more appropriate for a living room than a kid's play room.
Not wanting to buy anything and not wanting to deal with all 10 nail holes, I decided to remove the prints and replace them with something more playful. I thought some Lyle the Crocodile silhouettes were in order. What kid doesn't love Lyle?
The House on East 88th Street
I just traced an image of him dancing from The House on East 88th Street and used it as a template on some paint chips. (Just had them and liked the colors. But you could use scrapbook paper, gift wrap,  your kid's artwork, etc. )
I'm pretty happy with the final product. However, I did have to explain to Juliet what the shapes maybe I didn't do that great of a job on the cutting and tracing, but Ben recognized it as a dancing alligator, which is close enough.
It was really hard to take a picture of these without the glare, but it looks good in real life. :) It's a nice change and the best thing is that it was free.

What book character would your kids enjoy seeing displayed in their playroom?

those turned out so cute! I framed book jackets and put them in the playroom. The first thing sprite does when she gets a hardcover that has a jacket is take it off so I figured hey why not frame it :)

I love this idea I might have to do it with some of her favorite books :)

I always remove the book jackets, too! Framing them is a great idea. :)
