st. patrick's day books for kids

March 2, 2011

I don't know how it is with holiday books at your library, but my experience has been that I always arrive a few days too late. Usually, I show up about 2 weeks before the holiday and find maybe one or two books left because everyone has checked them out.

Having been a hermit for the past 4 months, I have been slowly easing my way back into normal life and have returned to the library with both girls several times in the past weeks. I thought I'd get a jump on St. Patrick's Day and put 10 books on hold last week. This is more than I have ever managed to find of any holiday book, so I was pretty excited when they called to let me know my books were waiting for me.

After a conversation with the librarian in which I think the phrases "you are checking out every St. Patrick's Day book in the system" and "now I won't have any left for my displays" were mentioned...I had my books and was excited to read them with Juliet.

Here are the four we liked the best. (The other 6 have already been returned for other holiday book seekers and a certain "book display.")
Too Many Leprechauns: Or How That Pot o' Gold Got to the End of the Rainbow
Too Many Leprechauns: Or How That Pot o' Gold Got to the End of the Rainbow by Stephen Krensky
This one has a character named Finn in it--I like that name. Maybe you know a little Finn who would like to see his name in print?
The Luckiest Leprechaun: A Tail-Wagging Tale of Friendship

I think Juliet likes this one the best. The dog is the key here.
That's What Leprechauns Do
That's What Leprechauns Do by Eve Bunting
Ari, Boo, and Col make me laugh as they try to get to the pot of gold without creating any mischief along the way.
St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day by Gail Gibbons
This is a nonfiction book about the holiday. We don't read the words, but I always love Gail Gibbon's illustrations. I always find great craft inspiration from her images.

What are your favorite St. Patrick's Day books?

You should check out The Night Before St. Partick's Day. It's cute. I've been meaning to tell you about a book called One as well. It is not at all holiday related. The author is Kathryn Otoshi. If you haven't read it, I really think you'd enjoy it. So simple.

Oops. I should learn to proof-read. It should say that the book's title is The Night Before St. Patrick's Day.

Your holiday book finding habits sound much like mine. I thought I was doing well getting a jump on the holiday by picking up the Gibbons title last week, only to find it's been requested by someone else this week! Grr... Thanks for the other suggestions. Maybe I still have time to request them before the big day!

Thanks, Rhonda! I'll look for it this week!

anne, I know. Seriously, this is the first time I had any success. Not sure how it happened. :)
