book inspired kids craft: paint splotch birds

March 15, 2011

my splotch
I love using books as inspiration points for our craft time. So, it was really fun when Juliet grabbed a book and asked if we could make something we saw in a new book we just received to review for Tiger Tales.
Roly-Poly Egg
Roly-Poly Egg by Kali Stileman is filled with whimsical illustrations with this red bird "Splotch" as the main character. You can see why she we would want to make her--she's a splotch of paint!

I went with the more literal interpretation and Juliet took some artistic license with hers. Pink was a better color and why stop at one egg when you can have two?

The story is cute and got us into the "egg" theme--I'm excited to dig out the spring/easter books and start some egg crafts.

Do you have any favorite spring or egg-themed books to recommend?

What a fun spring painting project. That's great artwork by both of you!

Who Likes Rain by Wong Herbert Yee and One Brown Bunny by Marion Dane Bauer are two of our spring favorites.

Oh, how sweet! She did a pretty good job, even if it is pink. ;) You're a great mom! Thanks for the visit today. :)

Oh yes, 'An egg is quiet', by Diana Aston, illustrated by Sylvia Lang. Doesn't tell us anything new now, but we love the illustrations!

Haha! Gorgeous :-) We reviewed this book with our own activity here: http://www.playingbythebook.net/2011/02/21/a-colourful-name-for-a-dream-debut/ (it's got a different title name in the UK)
