beach books for preschoolers

March 24, 2011

I love the beach, so it follows that I also love beach books. We're looking forward to a week at the beach in April, so I checked a few beach themed books out for us this week. I'm so glad I found these.
Out of the Ocean
Out of the Ocean by Debra Frasier
This book is going on my favorites list. It's one of those books that you want to reread as soon as you finish the last page. It has gotten us excited to look for sea glass and sharks teeth--did you know that red sea glass is the rarest? Juliet and I will be hunting all week long to find a piece of it.

I don't usually share text from the books, but I love this so much. A mother tells her daughter that you can ask the ocean to bring you something. The little girls interprets it as "treasure." She finds all sorts of treasure brought by the ocean, but then she says,

"But my mother, she keeps asking for things that are too big to carry home. Sun. Water. Silver Moonlight. The sound of waves. Sea turtle tracks at dawn. Those are always here, I tell her. You just have to look for them.

She laughs and says that now I know her secret. It's not the asking. It's the remembering to look. And sometimes, she says, the bigger the thing, the easier it is to forget to see it."

Isn't that beautiful?

I really, really love this book. I hope you can find a copy at your library.
Shells! Shells! Shells!
Shells! Shells! Shells! by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace
I'm not going to lie, there is a lot of shell info in this one, but if you have an inquisitive 4 year old, it is perfect. This book has answers that I don't have and that's why I like it. We're talking pigment centers, operculums, bivalves, and gastropods.
How Will We Get to the Beach?
How Will We Get to the Beach? by Brigitte Luciani
This book is fun because it requires your child to pay attention to objects on the page. Every time you turn the page one object is missing and you have to figure out which one. Smart and fun.

Do you have any favorite beach-themed books? Please share!

Thanks for the recommendations! One of the kids randomly pulled "Bats at the Beach" off the shelf at our library last visit. It's a great read-aloud book...lots of good rhymes and a funny twist on a typical beach book.

Thanks, Polly! We love that one, too. I had forgotten about it. Juliet recently discovered a plastic bat figurine at the park and has been very into all things "bat" lately. :)
