painting outside

May 20, 2010

We had fun painting outside this week. I taped some paper down on the driveway, gave Juliet her palette and brushes, and she went to town!

It was fun doing something normal, but in a new location. A fun book that we read this week that goes along with the Red, Yellow, Blue theme is called Kitten Red Yellow Blue by Peter Catalanotto.

Kitten Red, Yellow, Blue

Sophia has 16 kittens and Mrs. Tuttle finds a way to keep track of them. She names them all a different color. And while there are the expected colors, the fun surprise is that Juliet learned turquoise, rust, teal, tan, and chartreuse by reading this book! (I even learned what chartreuse was--a greenish-yellow, if you're wondering.)

We read this over and over again. The illustrations are fun and the cats are all doing funny things in each spread. The last pages involve a surprise party for their mom, Sophia. I think the picture of the surprised cat with all her hair standing on end was Juliet's favorite part.

This sounds like a great book! Every time when Anna paints with a palette like this, she immediately plunges in color mixing, so eventually the paper is a nice shade of dirty brown :)

Looks adorable! Is it still in print? You always get me excited about books that are no longer available. ;)

That looks perfect! We are working on colors in our house w/Grace! We'll have check this one out. Your chartreuse comment cracked me up. I learned about it on Blue's Clues! =)

I know my kids would love the book. Cat books are always a hit here!
