make your own antlers

Imogene's Antlers (Reading Rainbow Books)

My friend Amanda recently recommended Imogene's Antlers by David Small to me. I rushed to our library and was delighted to find a copy on the shelves!

The book was absolutely adorable and Juliet fell in love with it immediately. The story is about a girl who wakes up one morning sprouting antlers from her head! She is perfectly fine with it and enjoys hanging objects like donuts from them, but her mother is VERY disturbed.

I won't ruin the ending for you, but the antlers do go away and she wakes up with something else...

You all seem to like it when I post my "ugly crafts", so here's another one for you!

Juliet mentioned that she "would love a pair of antlers like Imogene's", so I set to work trying to make her some. I used cardboard and a wrapping paper tube. Oh yes. And A LOT of packing tape.

I made the headband a little too small, so it kept falling off, but after a few adjustments it fit just right. Juliet had fun running around the house and peeking in the mirror all afternoon.

I was happy to let her have her fun and then toss the contraption into the recycle bin that night!

(Sorry to have been missing for the past two days! Our internet service was out and it just returned. I hope you all have a wonderful Easter weekend!)

Thanks for the recommendation - sounds like a fun book. I noticed that our library has a movie with the same name. I wonder if it is any good?

I have never read the book. It looks cute. My oldest son would have loved those antlers when he was a preschooler. When he was 3 he wanted to be in the church Christmas program. Everyone was an animal. He decided we needed a deer in the program and he was going to be one. The morning of the program there was a line about the animals being there for Jesus' birth. My son shouted out, "And the deer!" It was too funny and cute. Anyway, your antlers reminded me of that. :-)

Wow, I have a feeling Emily would LOVE this book! It's not easy making antlers, I think you did a great job!

Looks like a lot of fun. At our local kids musuem there is a large skeleton of a deer with enormous antlers that M has always been fascinated with - we're hoping to get there over the Easter holidays (we have two weeks off school now) so I think we might end up making these antlers... :-)

I love Imogene's Antlers! But I have yet to read it to my daughters...I taught second grade for many years before I became a mom, so there are so many books I love, but I haven't introduced them to my own girls yet!

Love the homemade antlers! They gave Juliet a lot of joy!

Zoe, I hope you find this book! I think M and J would enjoy it. :) And I can't wait to see those antlers.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but would love to hear about it, Sheila!

Thanks for all the positive feedback on the antlers, everyone! :)
