books for babies and a baby for me

April 19, 2010

So, the big news around here is that I am around 16 weeks pregnant. I'm just now getting through the nauseous phase and am feeling more and more like I can face the world again.

I'm so excited for the chance to have another baby and for Juliet to get to be a big sister! Even though we have a bunch of baby books from Juliet's babyhood, I couldn't help but pick up a few new ones for our new little one.

I found this vintage counting book a few days after finding out I was pregnant. It's the first thing I bought to celebrate! (Just like a book nerd, right?)

The illustrations are so sweet. I can't wait to read this one with the baby.

A few weeks ago, I came across these song books--you know my obsession with song books--these are the first that I've seen that are specifically for little baby hands!

I look forward to sharing more baby books with you in the upcoming months and getting a chance to document some of our books with you. I started this blog when Juliet was 2, so all my posts about baby books are based on my memory as opposed to recent activity.

Do you have any favorite baby books to recommend to me?

I love baby books! We love our Dr. Suess's Box of Birth and Early Board Books: ABC book, The Foot Book, Mr. Brown Can Moo!, and There's a Wocket in my Pocket! My son is only 3 months old, yet he seems to love these books. Check out my new Baby Times segments on my blog- a couple of book suggestions there as well and videos of me and my Kindergartener reading to our sweetie!

Congrats! If you've never read any Phyllis Root picture books, you need to. Very lyrical.

Hug by Jez Alborough. Just 3 words and my son loved it as a little baby. He saw the love that a mommy has a for a child.

Congratulations! How exciting! My daughter's favorite baby books were the Usborne touch and feel books. That's Not My Kitten was her favorite!

Hallelujah! A baby! We just got Peek-a-Boo Polar Bear and friends and it's an adorable baby book.

ie: the seal covers his face with his tail and you lift the flap -Peek a boo says the seal.

We also got bouncy baby which is a large lift the flap - both fun and adorable.

Yay for babies (and for not feeling like you're going to puke all the time)! Prayer for a Child, Mr. Brown Can Moo, Hands Hands Fingers Thumb, Mommy Hugs/Daddy Kisses, My Many Colored Days, Bunny and Me, Dear Zoo, Goodnight Gorilla, iBaby's Goodnight Baby, Good Dog Carl, Little Hands Love, Brown Bear Brown Bear... Although you probably have most of these already. :) We LOVE Bunny and Me, which is one you may not have seen already.

I am so excited for you, Vanessa! That is great news. I pray you have a wonderful rest of your pregnancy. Is that why you were working so hard to potty train Juliet a few months ago? :-)

Congratulations!! How exciting! As babies, my kids always loved the little cloth books that make a crinkly sound when they touch them. They also loved the touch and feel books and anything with flaps (although that was more toddler age). Board books by Sandra Boynton were also a big hit here!

So many congratulations! What wonderful news for all of you. A book that M really enjoyed when waiting for J to arrive (so not technically a baby book) was There's a House Inside My Mummy by Giles Andreae and Vanessa Cabban http://www.amazon.com/Theres-House-Inside-My-Mommy/dp/0807578533/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1271700204&sr=8-1
i don't know why new copies are $280!! If you can put up with "Mummy" rather than "Mommy" I'd get it from amazon uk!

Well, congratulations! The second one is easier and harder in different ways. My son loved Chugga Chugga Choo Choo by Lewis in board book. I found he has his own preferences when it comes to books and has always gravitated toward anything to do with trains, cars, and large machinery and baby animals. Other favorites: Peek-a-Moo!, Baby Faces, and Where Is Baby's Belly Button? by Karen Katz. Those BRIGHT and EARLY board books mentioned by Jen have been a big hit here as well. I read regular sized simple picture books to my son starting early on and never had too many issues with destruction.

Congrats on the new baby! Annie Kubler is our favorite for song books. We've actually pretty much worn ours out after two girls so when number #3 comes along, we'll probably reinvest in them because they are that great! I also like the Real Mother Goose ones published by Scholastic. Glad you're feeling better :)

Congratulations (again!) I can't wait for the little one to start participating and read about him/her on the blog! =) I LOVE that counting book, I had it as a child! When I saw the cover a flood of memories came over me! I'm all about the classic "Good night Moon" for my babies as well as "I Love You Through and Through" by Bernadette Rossetti-Shustak, "I Love You Stinky Face" by Lisa McCourt (my older ones like this one too), Babyfaces Peek a Boo! By Roberta Grobel Intrater, and the "Touch and Feel" books, they feature animals. My babies always love those! A good one for Juliet right now might be "I'm a Big Sister" by Joanna Cole. We have the Big Brother version and didn't get the sister version for Grace when I was pregnant with Hannah. She was funny and kept calling herself a big brother after Hannah was born. I think she understands now! =)

How very exciting. Congratulations! Now what I am going to recommend are not baby stories, but DK lift-the-flap board books like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0751314242?ie=UTF8&tag=httpteachingy-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0751314242. We had several of them, and Anna loved them since she was about 6 months. Even now she keeps pulling them from the shelf and reviewing them on her own. Wishing you happy and healthy pregnancy!

Hooray and congratulations officially!! Ken swears he told me earlier and I swear he didn't... :)

Abby and now Luke's all time favorite is a lift-the-flap book called "hike and seek in teh forest" I think there are others in teh series but I cannot find them anywhere. :( If you ever come across the, Please let me know! Michelle Birgy got it for Abby when she was a baby.

Also, have you read any of Shirley Hughes stuff? It's our all time favorite books for Abby. Right now we've loaned All About Alfie from the library for a 2nd time. If you haven't seen these, you have to check one out - you'd love the stories & illustrations.
