say "i love you" with a book

What is a Whispery Secret? by Lois Hobart, Illustrated by Martha Alexander

I feel like it has been awhile since I've shared one of my vintage favorites. This one is a 1968 Parent's Magazine Press gem (I've discovered that I am particularly drawn to books published by this company.)

As with most vintage books, the thing that attracted me to it most was the illustrations. Isn't this butterfly just gorgeous?

The book begins, "What is a whisper? It's a tiny little quiet little soft little voice--like this."

There are several places where you have to whisper, which is particularly fun when reading aloud with a  young child. Juliet loves the whispery parts.

Have I mentioned my thing for owls? Well, I love them for some reason and these little guys make me love them even more.

The story discusses different things that whisper--this page says, "The leaves on the trees whisper in the breeze."

The little girl is explaining to her little brother what a "whispery secret" is. "Have you ever seen a mare look around and nuzzle her colt? She's telling a whispery secret."

She goes on to tell of other mother's telling their babies whispery secrets.

And finally, she lets her brother in on the "whisperiest secret of all":
I love you

At this point, I like to whisper I love you right into Juliet's ear and she usually follows by whispering it back to mine.

So, while I bought it for the illustrations, I read it for the interaction it brings with my daughter. This is a great way to tell your child "I love you" with a book.

What are your favorite "I love you" books to read with your children?

I'm linking up with Feed Me Books Friday at The Adventure of Motherhood--head over to see more books about LOVE.

Yes! A book is twice as nice when the illustrations are well done and match the mood of the story.

You inspire me to look for vintage books! I'm going to try and link to your "books we recommend" posts soon if that's okay with you.

They are a great resource that must have taken you some time to compile

I was able to find it listed at Alibris.com--if anyone is interested in buying a used copy. I've always had good luck with finding quality books on that site.
