what we're reading this week

October 31, 2009

From our home library:

Here are some books we have been reading a lot over this past week. I recently found these Little Bear books at Goodwill and am so glad I did. Juliet absolutely loves them. They have more text on the pages than we are used to reading together, but the illustrations are so beautiful that Juliet is able to stay focused and listen for the entire story.

Father Bear Comes Home by Else Holmelund Minarik, Illustrated by Maurice Sendak

This one has a mermaid in it--so it is probably Juliet's favorite. Little Bear tells his friends that his father is bringing a mermaid home from the sea. He doesn't, but an imaginary one shows up here and there.

Here's a link to a printable mermaid coloring page (it's not as cute as the mermaid from the book, but it still works.)

A Kiss for Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik, Illustrated by Maurice Sendak

We like reading this one and taking turns passing a kiss along each time the animals pass the kiss for Little Bear to each other.

Here's a link to a printable "Little Bear Kiss Coupon" to give to your child.

Little Bear's Friend by Else Holmelund Minarik, Illustrated by Maurice Sendak

Juliet loves Emily--Little Bear's little girl friend. At the end of the book, she has to say goodbye to little bear for the school year. She gives him an ink pen and he practices writing her a letter. Juliet has acted this scene out over and over again as she pretends to write Emily a letter. If you have a little girl named Emily, she really needs this book.

Olivia by Ian Falconer

We have had this book for a while, but it's always a fun one to read together. Juliet loves Olivia and Ian and we often pretend to be these characters. Juliet especially likes the part where Olivia gets a little sunburned at the beach. She always says, "Look! She turned pink!"

Here's a link to the Olivia website--it features printable coloring sheets, games, and other fun stuff. If you have a little Olivia fan, you might have fun there.

Those Little Bear books look familiar, but I don't think I've ever read them. Thanks for the reviews!

Oh yes! Little Bear books are absolute winners! Have you read any other books by Else Holmelund Minarik? We haven't but I'm always on the look out and would love to know if they're as good.
