dance themed books

October 9, 2009

Juliet started dance lessons this year and she fell in love with it instantly. She is taking a ballet and tap combo class, so I thought I would try to find a few books to go with her new-found hobby. Here are three that we found and enjoyed recently. For Baby: Twinkle Toes by Karen Katz
I have a special fondness for Karen Katz books. Her illustrations are sweet and appealing and the text is very baby-friendly and family-oriented. This is a great one to read to your young dancer.
Ballet: Angelina Ballerina by Katharine Holabird and Helen Craig
A little mouse wants nothing more than to dance all day--her parents get her into ballet lessons and with lots of hard practice, she becomes a beautiful ballerina on stage.

Tap: Rap a tap Tap Here's Bojangles--Think of That! by Leo and Diane Dillon

This is a great book about Bill "Bojangles" Robinson who is known as the greatest tap dancer of all time. During the Great Depression, Robinson was the highest paid black entertainer of his day. I like that this book features a male dancer who was a real person. Most of the dance books seem to feature female dancers.

Here is a link to a suggested reading list for children who like to dance--I haven't read many of the books listed, but if you are looking for more titles, this may be a good place to start!

We signed up Abby for a dance class through the city rec department. It turns out it's a "movement" class, aka, sing some songs and play with toys. We were bummed but she still likes it. We've been reading, Josephine Wants to Dance by Jackie French and she likes it a lot.
