Whopper Cake by Karma Wilson and Will Hillenbrand
This is a favorite one of Ben and Juliet--they have had such great fun reading this together this past week!
It's grandma's birthday and grandpa sets out to make the biggest cake he can--the story is told in rhyme, which makes it fun and funny at the same time. The pictures show crazy old grandpa disregarding the recipe's two cups of sugar because that "ain't enough...I'll put in twenty three. (Twenty-three pounds, that is...)"
How could a crazy grandpa making a whopper cake with twenty-three pounds of sugar, ten bags of flour, eighty-six eggs, and twenty-four boxes of cocoa all mixed up in the back of an old pickup truck be anything but fun?
There's a recipe for a whopper cake in the back of the book. Don't worry, you won't need a pick up truck to make it. It's scaled down for regular kitchen use. We haven't done it yet, not being the baker-type, but maybe one day we'll get around to it.
