an australian counting book

Wombat Walkabout by Carol Diggory Shields, Illustrated by Sophie Blackall

I'm a big fan of counting books--especially ones that make you forget that you are counting. Wombat Walkabout is such a book. It's got fun illustrations, rhyming text, counting, and Australian words thrown in as a delightful bonus.

Follow the adventures of 6 brave little wombats as they go walkabout (a long walk). Of course, a sneaky dingo shows up and tries to make the wombats into lunch, but never fear! The wombats outwit him smartly and make it back home in time for tea.

Juliet laughs at the dingo sneaking in the background and loves cheering on the wombats as they escape his swag bag. I tried my best Steve Irwin (crocodile hunter) imitation when I read the dingo's lines, but I think it ended up sounding more like a slightly deranged British accent. (think Simon Cowell plus Count Chocula) Juliet didn't seem to mind, though. She laughed hilariously EVERY time.

Go on, mates, check this one out. You'll love it.
