jungle-themed books to read with your toddler

July 22, 2009

A great way to get kids enjoy reading is to find books about subjects they are interested in. If your kids are like Juliet, their subject matter of choice may vary from week to week. We've had fire truck weeks, bug weeks, and beach weeks.

Here are a few books with jungle settings in case your little ones are into lions, giraffes, monkeys, and elephants this week.

Tall by Jez Alborough

This book has maybe 4 words that appear through the entire book--the story is told mostly through pictures, of a little monkey who tries to be tall, but someone always comes along who makes him "small" again.

His tall friends are gracious to him, though, and always allow him to climb up on their heads so he can be tall. Toddlers and babies would both get a kick out of this one.

Nobody Laughs at a Lion by Paul Bright, Illustrated by Matt Buckingham

Lion thinks he's the best, but Sister Lion asks, "what are you best at?" This gets him thinking.

He thinks running might be the answer, but is outdone by cheetah. Cheetah laughs quietly as he races past lion because "nobody laughs out loud at a lion. "

Lion keeps trying more things, but is outdone by his fellow jungle animals. In the end he is so angry, he lets out a big roar.

And that is when he realizes what he's best at: ROARING.
