No Bows! by Shirley Smith Duke, Illustrated by Jenny Mattheson
A really fun book for little girls to read. The main character tells us things like, "no bows--braids!" and no puppy--lizard!" A lot of her preferences are similar to juliet's as in "no nap--story!" and "no soap--bubbles!" In the end, the mom and dad ask, "hugs?" and the girl says, "yes! and kisses, kisses, kisses!" Juliet loves being smothered by kisses from me at this point. A fun bedtime book.
Activity Idea: I haven't done this yet, but I think it would be fun to make a book on snapfish using pictures of juliet in the style of this book. You know, something like, "no eggs (show her making a face at a plate of eggs)--bacon! (show her eating a piece of bacon) etc... (gasp! she lets her child eat bacon!) I think she would get a kick out of seeing herself and she is already familiar with the book, so I think she would recognize it instantly. If you have an older child (maybe a three or four year old), one that would sit down and make a book, it would be fun to let him or her decide what to depict as their preferences. They could draw pictures or glue down photos you print out for them. I'll let you know how it goes when/if I get around to doing this! Let me know if you try it!
